Data License
Overview
speedrun.io serves data from multiple sources, each with distinct licensing and usage rules. This page describes what license applies to each data tier, what you are permitted to do with it, and what requires a separate commercial agreement.
speedrun.io is committed to keeping the speedrunning ecosystem open and accessible. A high majority of our data is publicly available with generous access terms, including explicit permission for reasonable automated access. Our goal is to lower barriers for developers, researchers, and the community while protecting the platform from abuse and unauthorized commercial exploitation.
SRC Mirror Data CC-BY-NC 4.0
Data served under the /src namespace is mirrored from speedrun.com and remains subject to the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC-BY-NC 4.0) license, as applied by speedrun.com to their data. speedrun.io does not own this data and cannot grant rights beyond those conferred by the upstream license. speedrun.io is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by speedrun.com or Elo Entertainment Inc.
Under CC-BY-NC 4.0 you may:
- Share and redistribute the data in any medium or format.
- Adapt, transform, and build upon the data.
Under CC-BY-NC 4.0 you may not:
- Use the data for commercial purposes without separate permission from speedrun.com.
Attribution to both speedrun.com (as the data source) and speedrun.io (as the delivery platform) is required when redistributing or displaying this data publicly.
Native v1 Data CC-BY-NC 4.0
The /v1 namespace is speedrun.io's enrichment layer. It includes a normalized schema, derived metrics, leaderboard snapshots, and differential feeds built on top of the underlying speedrun.com data. It is free to use, in full, for non-commercial purposes.
/v1 is licensed under CC-BY-NC 4.0, the same terms as the /src mirror. We license our own enrichment work this way deliberately, rather than under a more permissive license, because much of what /v1 builds on originates from speedrun.com's NonCommercial-licensed data. Matching the underlying terms keeps the license simple and avoids granting rights we don't have.
Under CC-BY-NC 4.0 you may:
- Share and redistribute /v1 data in any medium or format.
- Adapt, transform, and build upon /v1 data.
Under CC-BY-NC 4.0 you may not:
- Use /v1 data for commercial purposes without separate permission.
Attribution to speedrun.io is required when redistributing or displaying /v1 data publicly (see Attribution below).
Looking ahead: as the platform matures, we intend to explore opening up parts of /v1 under more permissive terms. This is a direction we're working toward, not a current license commitment.
User & Third-Party Data Token Required
Certain /v1 endpoints expose user-associated data sourced from third-party platforms including Twitch and YouTube, collected with user consent. This data is not covered by the CC-BY-NC 4.0 license described above and is not publicly redistributable.
Access to user-associated data requires a valid bearer token obtained through the speedrun.io authentication flow. Use of this data is subject to the Privacy Policy, the Terms of Service, and any additional consent terms presented during the authentication process.
You may not redistribute, publish, or share user-associated data obtained through the API without the explicit consent of the user to whom that data belongs.
Proprietary Data Lake Commercial Only
Beyond /src and /v1, speedrun.io is building a deeper analytical layer, focusing on community and game-level insight products not accessible via the public API and not covered by any open license. Details on this offering will be announced as it matures.
This layer is built exclusively from aggregated, anonymized, and derived data. It does not contain personal data, which is governed exclusively by the Privacy Policy and is never sold or licensed.
Access will be available under commercial agreement once this offering is ready to announce. These assets represent speedrun.io's core intellectual property.
Contact [email protected] if you'd like to be notified when commercial data access becomes available.
Permitted Use
The following uses are explicitly permitted without requiring additional permission, provided you comply with the applicable license for each data tier and the API Terms of Use:
- Building applications, tools, bots, or services that query the speedrun.io API.
- Displaying speedrun.io data publicly, with attribution.
- Academic research, journalism, and non-commercial analysis.
- Automated access (scraping) that respects rate limits and does not circumvent access controls.
- Personal projects and hobbyist tools with no revenue component.
Prohibited Use
The following uses are not permitted without a separate written agreement:
- Redistributing speedrun.io data as a standalone data product, API, or feed for commercial gain.
- Selling access to speedrun.io data, directly or as part of a bundled product, without a commercial license.
- Using
/srcmirror data for commercial purposes (prohibited by the upstream CC-BY-NC 4.0 license). - Using
/v1data for commercial purposes without a separate commercial license (prohibited by its CC-BY-NC 4.0 license). - Circumventing rate limits, access controls, or authentication requirements.
- Bulk harvesting of data at a scale that degrades platform performance or constitutes an abusive access pattern.
- Redistributing or publishing user-associated data without the explicit consent of affected users.
- Presenting speedrun.io data in a way that misrepresents its source or implies endorsement by speedrun.io.
Attribution
When publicly displaying, redistributing, or building on speedrun.io data, you must include clear attribution. The following formats are acceptable:
- For
/srcmirror data: "Data sourced from speedrun.com via speedrun.io, licensed under CC-BY-NC 4.0." - For
/v1native data: "Data provided by speedrun.io, licensed under CC-BY-NC 4.0."
Attribution must be visible to end users of any application or product that publicly displays speedrun.io data. A footer link or "Powered by speedrun.io" notice is sufficient for most applications.
Commercial Licensing
If your intended use falls outside the permitted uses described above, including commercial redistribution of data, bulk data access beyond normal API limits, or access to proprietary data assets, a commercial license is required.
Commercial licensing terms are negotiated on a case-by-case basis depending on the nature and scale of intended use. To discuss a commercial agreement, contact [email protected] with a brief description of your use case.
Changes to This License
We may update this data license from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via the speedrun.io platform and developer channels. Continued use of the API after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated terms. All previous versions of this license will be readily available for review.
