Update

The API is almost here, and what that means for you.

The last three months have been a non-stop development crunch. Our team has been slowly growing, and we've decided it's time to give you a proper look at what's about to drop. The speedrun.io API is wrapping up its final testing pass. Before we flip the switch, I want to walk you through what it is, what it isn't, and why it's important for anyone building tools, running streams, or just trying to get reliable data out of the speedrunning scene.

Two Namespaces. One API.

The speedrun.io API is split into two distinct namespaces. Think of them as two separate tools under the same roof:

/src — The SRC Mirror

A complete, up-to-date, unaltered mirror of public speedrun.com data. Same data you've always relied on, but with consistent responses, predictable uptime, and no unexpected 500 failures during development. Free for non-commercial use under CC-BY-NC 4.0.

/v1 — The Native API

This is our own data stack built from the ground up on decades of data experience. Leaderboard filtering, community stats, historical preservation and an ambitious roadmap. The enrichment layer is free for the community under CC-BY-NC 4.0. As we grow, we're hoping to open it up even further.

If you've been building on speedrun.com's v1 API, which has been deprecated for quite a while with no active maintainer, /src is your drop-in. If you want to go deeper, /v1 is what lies ahead.

Timeline & Access

We're targeting a public API release in the weeks following this announcement. The full developer docs will live at docs.speedrun.io, generated directly from the OpenAPI 3.1 spec so they stay in sync with what's actually live. We will be providing a sneak peek to anyone interested before the API goes live.

Anonymous requests work out of the box. No account is needed to get started. If you want higher rate limits or access to additional features, bearer token auth is available. Simply register when the developer portal opens.

We stress-tested this pipeline live at event scale during SGDQ 2026 week, processing real-time public Twitch data. The performance was clean, the data is solid. We're close.

Announcement

So… we built a brand new speedrunning platform.

The Story

Hey everyone. This is Alex, the person behind speedrun.io. I've been speedrunning since 2021. Not just running, but fully immersed in it. The multiple screens, the community tools, the LiveSplit layouts, and the rush that comes with it. This scene has been a big part of my life these past few years.

And over these years, one thing kept bugging me: the infrastructure this scene runs on seemed to be running on fumes. My first time trying the speedrun.com API, I got my first 500 error. Some time later, I saw splits.io shut down. And just recently, I saw data disappearing from the speedrun.com API for good. I've seen this story before.

So I decided to fix it.

Why Now

Speedrunning used to be a hobby for gamers who loved to go fast, and now it's something mainstream. Events like Games Done Quick draw hundreds of thousands of concurrent viewers. Runners stream daily across Twitch, YouTube, and everywhere in between. The tools built by this community are the backbone of how we interact with our hobby.

But the data infrastructure those tools depend on? It's been getting shaky. The existing APIs that the community has relied on for years are deprecated, unmaintained, or simply no longer accessible. Projects built on that foundation have uncertain futures.

I've been quietly working on this project for three years now. The goal was never to replace anything, but to support what already exists. speedrun.io was designed to give this community a reliable foundation it can count on.

What's Here: Launching this Summer

When you land on speedrun.io, here's what you'll find:

Complete Data Mirror

A full, continuously updated mirror of publicly available speedrunning data from speedrun.com. Everything, preserved and organized.

Modern REST API

A versioned, documented API with consistent responses and predictable performance. Built for developers, streamers, and tool builders.

Record Vault

A data integrity layer for historical preservation. Because records from 10+ years ago should still matter in 10 more.

Transparent Licensing

Clear data tiers so you know exactly what you can and can't do. No hidden terms, no surprises.

What's Coming

This is just the beginning. We've got a pretty exciting roadmap:

  • Mmulti-source runner and run authentication
  • Analytics and insights layer for trends, record history, and community-level stats
  • LiveSplit onboarding, analysis, and archival
  • Natural Discord integration via a dedicated bot
  • PubSub, WebSocket, and MCP server integrations
  • Runs that exist outside the speedrun.com ecosystem
  • A destination to help new and existing speedrun projects grow

The feature list is growing each day. Drop your email below and we'll keep you in the loop.

The API

The API is the heart of what we're building, and it's split into two parts:

/src — the SRC Mirror. This is a complete, unaltered mirror of the publicly available data from speedrun.com. It's provided under CC-BY-NC 4.0 and is completely free to use for non-commercial projects. If you've been building tools on speedrun.com data, this is the reliable foundation those tools have been missing.

/v1 — the Native API. This is our own enrichment layer. It's a collection of curated leaderboards, real-time stats, community-centric analytics, and a lot of really cool other stuff in the works. Built from the ground up for this community, and free to use under CC-BY-NC 4.0, with an eye toward opening it up further down the road.

Full API docs and endpoint references will be live at docs.speedrun.io. Documentation is generated directly from the OpenAPI 3.1 spec and stays in sync with the live API.

Anonymous requests are welcome. Bearer token auth is available for enhanced rate limits and extra features.

"As a fellow runner since 2021, I've seen the passion of the speedrunning community first hand. The sheer amount of willpower is inspiring. I've watched these gamers persevere despite broken splits, OBS failures and all the other pain that comes with the territory. The least I could do was provide them with reliable tools for their journey ahead." — Alex Geis (thekrynn), founder

Speedrun.io isn't a corporate product. It's a community project, built by a runner, for runners. This is a call out to the competitors, streamers, tool builders, and everyone who loves watching world records happen live at 3 AM. This is for you.
