About speedrun.io
speedrun.io is a data platform built for the speedrunning community. Originally, it was planned as a reliable mirror of speedrun.com's public data, including a high-performing API to solve the scene's existing infrastructure issues. You can read all about that at the initial news release. Through the building process, the vision has evolved quite a bit and I wanted to use this page to walk you through the journey.
How It Began
During my few couple of months of speedrunning, I found myself surfing YouTube quite often for skips, tips, tricks and runs outside of the official leaderboards. I noticed at some point that I was copying down video URLs as sifting through the leaderboards became a chore, at which point I decided to use the speedrun.com API to automate a list for myself. It began as a weekend project, but ended fairly quickly after a bunch of 500 errors from setting up a simple loop. This was around 2022, at which point I decided to put it on hold and keep an eye on it and look for potential fixes.
A few years later, I read a post on the potential changes to the Twitch video retention policy and the communities' concerns about losing historical VODs for runs. Having had a number of experiences in media archival over the years, I decided it was a perfect time to dive back in. The state of the API was exactly where I had last seen it years ago, and finally decided to do something about it. After a considerable amount of development, I'm happy to say that the journey has officially begun.
Plans for the Future
Along the way, I've learned that the speedrunning community treasures its autonomy above all else. Raising funds for the initial plan of fast-tracking a larger scale video preservation platform became complicated as a result, so I've decided to focus on building scalable tools for a sturdy foundation. While developing the platform, I also discovered enormous collections of untapped media, knowledge and potential outside of the existing communities, as well as a fundemental lack of awareness outside the gaming world. It's my hope that the speedrun.io /v1 API, along with several other planned features, will hopefuly remedy that and potentially provide a path back to the bigger picture of VOD preservation and beyond.
Independence
speedrun.io is fully self-funded and currently operates on a non-commercial basis. Nothing here is monetized. That's the current posture, and any potential change will be a deliberate, announced decision, not something that happens quietly.
The Team
It's just me on engineering. I built and run the entire platform. A small marketing team joined in 2026 to help get the word out. If that changes, this page will change with it.
